What does a health physicist do?
The field of health physics is very diverse.
- Medical HPs work in a clinical setting to insure that the institution follows all necessary protocols to protect clinicians and support staff as well as patients and their families.
- HPs in regulatory agencies such as state boards of health and federal agencies such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, and others develop and administer necessary processes.
- Environmental HPs assist in prevention or clean up of environmental spills or releases to prevent unneccesary exposure to workers or members of the public.
- HPs may be professors in universities of colleges that train HPs.
- Research HPs may work in national laboratories or universities to continue research into the effects of radiation on biological systems.
